What I Learned In My Women’s Studies Classes - Quillette

"Women are less happy nowadays despite 40 years of feminism, a new study claims.
Despite having more opportunities than ever before, they have a lower sense of well-being and life satisfaction, it found.
The study, The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness, said the same was true for women of different ages and whether or not they were married or had children."

But whatever. I wasn't trying to prove that holding a door open is a form of oppression. I was trying to prove that eselle could have perfectly legitimate reasons for not feeling comfortable with guys holding doors open only for women, and even if in fact most women don't feel the same way (which you haven't offered any evidence of), that wouldn't stop her reasons from being valid. There are tons of things that at one point or another the majority of people in a place have believed are wrong that turned out to be right, or right that turned out to be wrong. Assuming something must be correct because the majority of people believe it is such a major fallacy it has it's own Wikipedia page: …

The Shriver Report – Top 18 Issues Challenging Women Today

Indeed, so far is the system from implying any social superiority of women that it probably took its rise from what we should regard as their deepest degradation, to wit, from a state of society in which the relations of the sexes were so loose and vague that children could not be fathered on any particular man.

I think that's only to be expected, given that changing gender roles haven't yet reached a point where women are able to make a wide variety of choices about work, marriage, and childbearing and have them all considered mostly acceptable. Instead, we're in a midpoint where there's almost nothing a woman can decide with regard to those things without attracting criticism. Childfree women are selfish and will regret their choices when they die alone, while women who have large families are painted as either irresponsible or religious fanatics. Women who have children later in life are risking their children's health and won't be able to keep up with them. Women who have children early in life are missing out on youthful fun and exploration and will regret it later. Working mothers are neglecting their children. Stay at home mothers are betraying feminist principles and are helicopter moms on top of it. I think that we can allow that these changes are causing stress to women without arguing in favor of turning back the clock.

Saul (2006) argues that, despite it being possible that we unknowinglyapply ‘woman’ on the basis of social subordination, it isextremely difficult to show that this is the case. This would requireshowing that the gender terminology we in fact employ isHaslanger's proposed gender terminology. But discovering the groundson which we apply everyday gender terms is extremely difficultprecisely because they are applied in various and idiosyncratic ways(Saul 2006, 129). Haslanger, then, needs to do more in order to showthat her analysis is non-revisionary.
