ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) - The ALS Association
ALS is the acronym for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Medically, ALS is categorized as a motor neuron disease that typically occurs in the fifth or sixth decade of a person’s life. Patients of ALS typically die within five years of onset of the disease from motor neuron paralysis and death, leading to respiratory and musculoskeletal failure. Currently, there is no known cure for ALS and the only FDA approved drug in existence is Riluzole, which prolongs life for a few months rather than curing any symptoms or causes. Both familial and sporadic cases of ALS exist within the population, with sporadic cases making up about 90%.
