One issue that has received attention recently is pricediscrimination. By this I do not mean discrimination in pricing on thebasis of a person’s membership in traditionally protectedclasses such as race and sex. (This is widely regarded as wrong.)“Price discrimination” refers to discrimination in pricingon the basis of people’s willingness to pay: charging more topeople who are willing to pay more and charging less to people who arewilling to pay less. Economists tend to think that price discrimination isvaluable insofar as it enables firms to increase output. But the moralstatus of it is less clear. When it was revealed that Staples and otheronline retailers were charging consumers in different zip codesdifferent prices for the same products at the same time, consumerswere outraged. But some writers argue that this practice is no worsethan movie theaters giving discounts to children (Elegido 2011;Marcoux 2006). The problem may be that Staples and others engaged inthis practice without disclosing it. In doing so, they were takingadvantage of consumers’ ignorance.
