To understand early Christian letters more nearly as ancient writers and readers would have understood them requires some understanding of the typical social contexts of letter-writing in the Greco-Roman world. Three sets of social relationships were central to that culture. First are hierarchical relations between superordinates and subordinates best exemplified by the social institutions of the patron/client relationship. Second are relationships between equals epitomized by the Greek and Roman institutions of friendship. Third are the social relationships of the household which combine characteristics of both hierarchical relations and relations between equals. The giving of praise and blame was essential to the working of these institutions in antiquity. To praise meant to bestow honor; to blame meant to take away honor and cause shame. It was through honor that a person's rightful place in society was defined. Honor provided a person with a status in society. It was like a social rating which entitled the person to act and be treated in certain ways. A person knew how to locate himself and behave toward superiors, inferiors and equals because of the system of honor.

High quality nursing education is a vital component of a strong health care infrastructure, and Vietnam’s health care system urgently needs professional nurses. Friendship Bridge Nurses Group (FBNG) seeks donations for a model Master’s in Nursing Program at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City. In collaboration with our Vietnamese colleagues, FBNG has developed Vietnam’s first ever Master’s in Nursing Program. In 1991, Vietnam had no Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs—now there are ten. However, there are only 40 nurses with a master’s degree in all of Vietnam and only 32 of those hold degrees in nursing. We have brought 55 U.S. nurse educators (with masters and doctoral degrees) to Vietnam from a variety of private and public universities in states throughout the U.S. Volunteerism has been the basis for our success, but to successfully implement an advanced curriculum, train the next generation of educators, and mentor nurses to take leadership roles, we must properly finance the initiative. Sustainability is built into the project in that these educators are training their successors who will then be financed by universities in Vietnam.

In classical thought the basis of friendship and political groups (also military groups) was eros, male sexuality. There is much evidence that the male bond was often stronger than heterosexual relationships, especially among the aristocratic classes. In many spheres of life men and women were strictly separated. Friends were to be equals and equality to characterize the relationship. An ancient maxim said that friends shared all things in common. The ideals of Greek male friendship greatly influenced ancient epistolography. Throughout antiquity, theorists asserted that the genre of the letter was epitomized by the friendly letter. In spite of the fact that the letter was extensively used far beyond the domain of Greek friendship, writers continued to speak as if the only true letter was the friendly letter. A group of motifs and cliches derived from classical Greek friendship became part of the standard content of the letter. It is doubtful that any but those with some wealth and leisure could attain either the Greek or Roman ideal of friendship. The sharing of two selves, which was a classical definition of friendship, was also used to characterize the function of the letter; the letter permitted absent friends to share in one another.
