Donald Trump at center of immigration debate - …

I decry, once again, a Senate that produces a bill like this from behind closed doors, with minimal opportunity for input from the public – not to mention minimal time for Senators not a part of the inner sanctum of plotters – to consider thoughtfully the consequences of its adoption. Publish it online, and let the debate begin; otherwise batten your hatches for a housecleaning of both parties.

USA Politics In immigration debate, what constitutes 'merit'

“Today’s Senate agreement falls short of the actions needed to both solve our country’s illegal immigration problem and also strengthen our legal immigration system. Border security and a reliable employment verification system must be our first priority.”

In immigration debate, what constitutes 'merit'

Thus, another confirmation of the iron rule of the nation’s immigration politics: No matter how discontented the public is with our broken immigration system, the political elite’s answer is always higher levels of immigration.

Poll shows Americans conflicted over immigration debate

And former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who had earlier found the former proposals favorable quickly slammed the latest proposal. “I strongly oppose today’s bill going through the Senate. It is the wrong approach. Any legislation that allows illegal immigrants to stay in the country indefinitely, as the new ‘Z-Visa’ does, is a form of amnesty. That is unfair to the millions of people who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S.

“Rudy’s top priority and main objective is to ensure our borders are secure and to stop potential terrorists and criminals from coming in. The recent Fort Dix plot is a stark reminder that the threat of terrorism has made immigration an important matter of national security. Mr. Hannity: But I can tell you, Senator, as conservatives — and, by the way, we’re looking at live pictures of a Los Angeles immigration protest going on right now as we speak here. Senator, I can tell you, as somebody who’s on the radio three hours a day, I’m here at FOX one hour every night, I speak to conservatives all the time.
They want a specific answer to this question: Is this an amnesty bill? Do people who have broken our laws and not respected our sovereignty, do they get to stay in this country?

I am against this bill. Anyone who wants to come to this country should have to come here legally. It is nothing short of amnesty for people who have violated American immigration law. I couldn’t agree more with AFL-CIO position. Nobody is going to fool me that this bill is anything but amnesty. Supporters can spin it any way that they like, but amnesty is amnesty. There is absolutely no reason why anyone who wants to come to this country cannot do it legally. This bill had better go down to defeat.
