And just as we will do almost anything to help a student who really wants to succeed, so they will help us to be good teachers if they sense that we are sincere in our efforts to succeed at teaching.

Here, in no particular order, is what I’ve learned about the necessary qualities of good writing (or content, in our digital vernacular), based on my own 25 years’ working as a writer and editor… and even longer career as a reader.

Since I had always been a reserved, passive student (probably reinforced by bullying), it was hard as an education major to get out of the "student" role and ease into the "teacher" role. I had no experience being a leader. I was used to fading into edges of the room, being a wallflower. I had no motivation to be a teacher. I wasn't passionate about it. I was indifferent at best, and uncertain at worst.

The problem with paying for school is that we feel ripped off most of the time. Besides the professors that don't seem to teach anything, we have textbooks sometimes that we need to get for a couple hundred dollars and we don't even use it. There is no doubt that the higher education system is flawed. There is a way to get around its flaws though. For example, go to before choosing a class, so that you can make sure you get a good professor. As for the books, you can always sell them, even though it's an extra hassle. Also, if certain study methods aren't working for you, keep trying new ones and get advice from peers and even your professor. The system is flawed, but not unchangeable.

Key word in teaching field is to be well-prepared for the lesson, knowledgeable, and to learn the culture. The most important thing to do before the lesson is to create a good environment within the class that will help our students, to be a good listener and help those that need support with the language. And also to be more patient with them in the learner stage.

The good teachers draw the most students, get the most requests for letters of recommendation, work most diligently at grading papers, give the most office hours and are most frequently visited during those office hours, are most in demand for committee work, work hardest at class preparations, work hardest at learning their students' names, take the time to give students counsel in areas that have nothing to do with specific courses, are most involved in professional activities off campus.
