In this BSc (Hons) in Athletic and Rehabilitation Therapy (AL841), students will become skilled in the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries related to physical activity. In first year, the basic building blocks of science are introduced, as is athletic rehabilitation therapy, while students have the
opportunity to become involved in the preparticipation screening of injuries in various teams including collegiate and professional teams. In the second year, anatomy, conditions and injuries serve as the theme, while students will be introduced to clinical practice through student-led clinics and practical placements. In third year, clinical practice with student-led clinics is further developed and the main themes are injuries, diagnosis and therapies, thereby creating the foundation pillars for the clinical practice placement which takes place in the first semester of fourth year. In the final year, the emphasis is on advanced clinical and rehabilitation techniques with the clinical practice placement having an embedded research project strand. The final year is really a capstone year designed to cap all the skills acquired by the student throughout the four years of the programme, preparing them for the profession of athletic rehabilitation therapy and employment as a professional clinical practitioner.

What is Sports Physio and how can it Help

The mind is a critical component when it comes to returning from injury, and it is something that can easily be integrated into one’s rehabilitation. If athletes can begin to see his or her rehabilitation as a performance, prepare as they would during season, and work just as hard as they would for their sport, they will gain more confidence in themselves. That is, by the time they are cleared, they feel that they are prepared, in all aspects of sport. The mental side of rehabilitation is barely touched by sport professionals, maybe not because they don’t notice it’s present, but because they may not know how to integrate the most effective skills to help their clients cope and prepare. Every athlete is different, every injury is different, so how can one become as mentally prepared as they are physically? It gets to be a little bit of a touchy subject.

If you’re involved in any of the exercises that physical therapists know lead to injuries, you’ll likely enjoy the benefits acquired from seeing an orthopedic rehab specialist. Even exercises as seemingly innocuous as can lead to a herniated disc that requires a visit to a rehab specialist. Anyone can improve their health with regular exercise, but people who have suffered significant setbacks from a traumatic injury may require intervention from a specialist who is trained to return patients to the highest degree of personal independence possible.

Like many other SCI programs that believe that there is a therapeutic window after injury in which the recovery potential is greatest, Project Walk ideally would like to start treating patients relatively soon after injury. The program feels that without proper stimulation and load bearing, a newly injured individual with SCI will soon start losing bone density, muscle mass, and CNS functioning, which will make functional recovery in the future even more difficult. Although the program has treated many after this early therapeutic window, sometimes with dramatic improvements, much more effort is required to accrue the same degree of benefit. Nevertheless, the issue of early treatment represents a bone of contention to many traditional SCI rehabilitation specialists who often dismiss any improvement as something that would have accrued anyway during this period of neuronal plasticity.
