Flower Study IV | Robert mapplethorpe, Flowers ..

Veronica Vera quite simply made history when she opened Miss Vera’s Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls in New York City in 1992. The world’s first crossdressing academy has become internationally famous since that day, offering a much needed service to the vast transgender community. , says Veronica Vera, the former Wall Street trader, a sex-positive feminist/activist whose academy is a resource for the estimated 3 to 5 percent of the adult male population who feel the need, at least occasionally, to dress in women's clothing. For Veronica, her school began as a way to finance a memoir about what she had learned as a sexual explorer, former porn star, and journalist with a dozen years of columns based on her personal experience and hundreds of interviews with the artists, denizens, and demimonde of pre-Disney New York. Instead, Miss Vera’s Academy became a force unto itself, identifying Veronica Vera as a visionary. She had to put aside her memoir to live a new chapter.

New York City, NY – My dear friend and legendary superstar of adult films, Jamie Gillis passed away from Melanoma, two days ago. It was only a few months back that we spent the afternoon in his quaint, 1800’s, historical home in NYC, shooting an interview with Cass Paley. There was a lush green tranquil court yard in the back of the crooked little house which offered a beautiful, softly diffused natural, light. A few minutes to set up equipment, tripod, camera, tape, angle a reflector or two, wire Jamie to the microphone, and we were on our way.

Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium | LACMA

Despite the obvious references to the Renaissance idea of what constitutes ideal beauty and the history of photography from Wilhelm von Gloeden to Man Ray, this exhibition shows Robert Mapplethorpe as an artist who is firmly anchored is his era; his contemporaries are Andy Warhol and Brice Marden; Polaroids were the medium of choice in the 1970s, and the focus on the body and sexuality was, at the time, for many artists like Vito Acconci or Bruce Nauman a theme that was key to social change.

His radical portrayals of nudity and sexual acts were always controversial; his photos of sadomasochistic practices in particular caused a stir and frequently resulted in protests outside exhibitions and in one instance, a lawsuits was brought against a museum director.

Social Science History Bibliography - Andrew Roberts

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) came to collaborate at Graphicstudio intrigued by the possibilities of photogravure, an almost forgotten 19th century photographic process that the studio had begun to research and revitalize in the 1980s. Photogravure's range of tones and shadow detail was ideal for the interpretation of Mapplethorpe's exquisite figure study and still-life photography, and he was open to experimentation with color and texture. In their collaboration, Mapplethorpe and Graphicstudio's Research Director Deli Sacilotto gave an entirely new look to the beautiful process, which had been ignored by photographers for over six decades.
